Conch Shell on Bimini IslandThe Spirit of the Conch Shell

As received by D. Tremblay July 2008

We begin by saying this- thank you for noticing our beauty in the soft curves and round crevices that our body shell makes. And thank you for picking us up to look at us.  Our hearts wave to you.

Our backs rise to the ever facing shadow of the sun that rises overhead, as we dwell within the watery depths.  We move along slowly, savoring our walk, our path to and fro.  There is harmony among us.  Amongst the creatures of the sea. We share much.  We share the breath and the fall of each other.  We share the tide and the ever dwindling food supply as we all compete for it in love, not earnest.

We catch the rays of dawn and when we rise to the surface for the last time, departing from our earthly shell, we awaken to a mist and magic of a dawn you can’t imagine possible.  A place of incomparable beauty.  A place of many beings and others like us.

During our time at sea we ride the waves in the habit of our kind, holding the soil of the rocky bottom under our foot.  Grasping and allowing the tide to move us about, like speed skaters on ice- rhythmic and defined.  We do not crash or bumble about- it is with deliberate slow finesse that we move and travel.  In herds, some might say, but indeed as individuals on a journey.

We encompass life into the whole of our shell.  Bringing fast the tide waters to our mouths, like sucking at the breast of a mother.  We are like infants in the sea, but by far wiser.  Our wisdom and heritage comes from eons of shells piled upon the sea floor- many shells created, destroyed and created again as we incarnate again and again, always favoring the foot we left behind.

You value us for our shells, yes, it is true they are pretty.  But so are we the beings that thrive within.  We find our home as valuable as the roof over your heads and just as comfortable.

We are the spirits of the conch, come to tell you the many times we have breached the ocean floor, layed upon the soil, feasted upon those fit for our mouths and cherished the joys of watching other conch grow.  Their spirits sing and their feet dance and we intermingle and rejoice.

There is a song we sing, if you care to here.  An ode to the sea and the life she gives to us.  She is our caretaker and bringer of many good things.  She is a gift to all.  I am not here to say thank you for noticing me upon the beach.  I am here to speak on behalf of every living thing and to say be gentle and be kind with us.  Our lives follow a delicate pattern and we find joys as readily as the next being.  Let your life proceed joyfully.  We do this much- live joyfully.  It is our nature to be this way.

Conch Shell, Bimini Island             Love to you, fellow people.  And love to the souls of many.
